About the Resource

About NewsREAD

A monthly resource developed by EduEdge's Secondary Academic Team to connect current-affairs reading, knowledge-building and examination application.

01

Why we developed NewsREAD

It begins with a common learning challenge

“I don't have enough ideas.”

This is one of the most common challenges Secondary students share with us. Parents may recognise the same concern from another angle: their child may not be reading widely enough or building sufficient current-affairs knowledge to write and speak with depth.

Content accounts for 10 out of 30 marks in Continuous Writing. Oral Communication also requires students to use relevant ideas and examples to explain and support their views.

To provide more structured support beyond weekly lessons, EduEdge's Secondary Academic Team developed NewsREAD. Each edition takes students from understanding a theme to building knowledge, examples and vocabulary, then studying and attempting practical application.

Ongoing Support

How does NewsREAD support students?

01

Expand current-affairs knowledge and worldview

Explore carefully selected local and international examples and understand why they matter.

02

Develop ideas, examples and perspectives

Build a growing bank of content that can support different writing and oral topics.

03

Build stronger vocabulary

Learn W.I.S.E. vocabulary and useful expressions, then practise using them in context.

04

Connect reading with expression

See how knowledge and examples can be developed into fuller writing and oral responses.

05

Deepen the application of structures and techniques

Use annotated models to understand how EduEdge's structures and techniques are applied.

The Meaning Behind the Name

Read · Enlighten · Appreciate · Discuss

These four words reflect the NewsREAD learning journey. Students read and understand a theme, gain insight from the material, appreciate different perspectives, then organise and discuss their ideas for application in writing and oral communication.
